BallBOPPer 2026 Launcher Overview

This post goes over a few ways that the Launcher differs from the earlier version. More detail will be provided in the documentation going forward.

Like the 2023 version, the 2026 Launcher is a completely separate system from the Rover and can be used by itself without the Rover.

All of the improvements incorporated into the 2026 Launcher are designed to achieve True Game Play. True Game Play or TGP is the ability to truly play points, games, sets and matches in the style of a specific opponent.

True Game Play (TGP) requires that the balls be launched:

— at high frequency and with perfect timing

— from elevations above the court, from just off your shoelaces to shoulder high

— and intercepted, caught and returned from wherever that happens to be on the court

Like the Rover, the elevation system (which provides for the launching and catching of balls at various heights) and the catcher (which traps the balls and recycles them back into the launcher) are completely separate components.

The Elevator and Catcher are not pictured here and will be discussed in detail separately.

One feature that has not changed from the 2023 BallBOPPer is the rotating base. Both versions rotate 360 degrees with the ability to launch balls in any direction.

This capability is not required for a stationary ball machine, or for other slow-moving systems, but is absolutely necessary for a system that travels the court at human-like speeds with the ability to accurately launch balls to any spot.

But while the rotating turret capability has not changed, the turret bearing itself, mounted between the wheel plate and the Launcher, is considerably more robust and therefore able to handle the higher forces added by elevation and catching.

Along with the new bearing, the Rover is no longer powered from the Launcher through the turret. The 2026 Rover now has its own batteries and its own compute and sensor systems.

This has effectively moved the navigation and positioning responsibility to the Rover and enabled a redesign of the sensor system on the 2026 Launcher.

The cameras in the Launcher are now mounted further forward, can rotate up and down through 180 degrees, and are dedicated to tracking the ball, the player and the player's racket for the purpose of intercepting and catching every shot - or at least those shots that are returned inside the lines.

All of this again is about achieving True Game Play, but the BallBOPPer has also become easier to use.

The Ball Bucket that was part of the 2023 BallBOPPer is now the Ball Revolver.

The Ball Revolver functions the same way as a regular ball tube for the rapid manual reloading of the balls. It is in fact essentially 6 ball tubes, arranged like the cylinder from a western 6 shooting "revolver", with a 7th tube in the center.

The big advantage of the Ball Revolver over the 2023 Ball Bucket is its ability to reload and relaunch balls at high velocity. The balls now flow effortlessly off the court and into the Ball Revolver during reloading as the Rover speeds around the court and then flow smoothly and consistently out again for relaunching.

The version of the Ball Revolver shown above holds 42 balls. With TGP the balls can be caught and reused multiple times, and this combined with the BallBOPPer's ability to auto reload them from the court at high speed, ends up making 42 balls more than enough.

But if you want to use the Launcher by itself without the full TGP capability, then a taller version of the Ball Revolver can hold 70 balls and because of its greater height, it can be held very comfortably at waist level for manually reloading like a regular ball hopper.

One other improvement to the Launcher is the elimination of the separate dolly that was needed for transporting the 2023 version.

The dolly has been replaced by a set of wrap-around wheels that are integrated into the Launcher.

These wheels fold under the Launcher to roll it on and off the court, or with the Launcher nested into the Rover, the wheels wrap around under the Rover for rolling both as a single unit.
